CHEERLEADERS NEED PROTECTION TOO! (June 1, 2014)
For the past 27-years, I have coached cheerleading at a Long Island high school. This past season, our team suffered 3 concussions. These dangerous injuries led me to some research as to WHAT, if anything, I could do to help protect my girls. My girls wore these protective headbands throughout the season and I was so impressed with this ForcefieldFF Cheerleading Headgear that I wrote to the company to tell them how awesome they were.
These polymer headbands were amazing and protected my team so well. They asked if I would endorse them, and this is why I am writing to you. While NO product can promise you, an athlete will not get a concussion, I am here to tell you that this product can definitely come between a cheerleader and a head injury! I can tell you first hand, this product works! The headband is patented and was invented by the same doctor who invented the facemask for football eliminated paraplegics and quadriplegics in children. The product was licensed to Riddell for 23-years.
I evaluate lawsuit cases for NYSIR, defending school districts in cheer cases throughout NY. The first thing they want know is: Was the school liable and did they do everything they could to ensure the safety of the athlete? These headbands provide such protection and help to ensure the safety of athletes in many sports.
Experts agree cheerleading concussions and sub-concussive injuries are dangerous and on the rise. A study by The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital says "Concussions made up a large percentage of high school injuries in cheerleading." "These athletes are getting stronger, faster, doing more challenging stunts, and there's no protection. No headgear! That's absolutely dangerous," said Dr. William Feldner, a sports medicine specialist. Dr. Abraham says just as dangerous as concussions, are sub-concussive impacts. Michigan LIVE states, "Researchers see changes in brain scans of athletes who have never reported a concussion. For that reason, experts now say reforms need to go beyond reducing concussions and focus instead on the total number of impacts that young athletes experience."
Sincerely,
D. R.
